Santa Catharina Church, a spiritual emblem for Roman Catholics, stands proudly alongside the Prince Diponegoro Mosque and Haleluya Christian Protestant Church since its establishment in 1973 and inauguration in 1975. Encompassing a building area of 1,030 m² on a 2,860 m² land, the church draws inspiration from the design of Indonesia’s first Catholic Church, the Santa Catharina Church in Surabaya. This place of worship is named after the sacred female figure who became a martyr due to her unwavering loyalty to Lord Jesus.
Its architecture reflects the elegance of ancient Roman style, while the roof portrays the richness of Javanese traditions without additional decorations. The Roman influence is palpable in the roof structure adorned with stained glass windows depicting the cross.
The church is divided into two buildings: the main building houses the congregation’s worship area and a confession room, while the multifunctional hall serves as a library, office, pastor’s room, and restroom. A tall bell tower with a cross-topped pinnacle stands proudly in front of the main building. Mass is conducted twice every Sunday and on significant days such as Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Christmas, which are all open to the public. Additionally, the church serves as a beautiful venue for wedding ceremonies, followed by receptions at various scenic locations within TMII.
