Situated strategically amidst the island of Sumatra, the shimmering Malacca Strait and the South China Sea, Riau unveils its beauty through a constellation of 3,214 islands. Majestic rivers like Kampar, Siak, Rokan, and Indragiri Rivers bestow blessings upon the residents of Riau.
Embark on an exploration of Riau’s splendor through the Riau Pavilion at TMII. Distinctive Malay architecture, exemplified by structures like the Balai Selaso Jatuh Tunggal, Malay Houses with Kajang Roofs, Malay Houses with Limas Roofs, and Malay Houses with Lontik Roofs, mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Riau.
Elephant and tiger statues, oil drilling tools, and other artifacts bring their cultures to life within the Riau Pavilion. The Big Book of Gurindam Dua Belas, a poetic masterpiece by Raja Ali Haji, adds enchantment with its captivating verses, reflecting the radiant Malay literary tradition in Riau.
The Riau Pavilion presents replicas of the gateway (gabah) of the Royal Palace of Riau Lingga, along with the Pencalang House or Malay House with Lontik Roofs that are adorned with intricate carvings. Beneath the Lontik House lies the pavilion’s office and a mini-library, while the upper area showcases captivating displays of Riau’s cultural heritage.
The Limas Traditional House, modeled after the residence of nobility, serves as a homage to the palaces of Sultan Indragiri, Riau Lingga, and Sultan Palawan. The attic of this house once served as a space where young girls would weave while secluded, aptly named the anjungan pengintai. Next in line is the Balai Adat Selaso Jatuh, surrounded by cascading corridors just like its name, providing a versatile space for discussions, traditional ceremonies, and adorned with Riau bridal attire and the iconic tiered bridal platform (Peterakna). The number of tiers on the bridal platform is said to symbolize the status of the bride.
