NORTH SUMATRA PAVILION

Horas!

North Sumatra, with its endless charm, is ready to captivate your heart. Each of the eight Puak or tribes has its own unique customs. The natural scenery is truly enchanting, offering a variety of tourist attractions from Prapat to Nias Island.

The resilience of its people is unquestionable. No wonder North Sumatra is home to many successful merchants, lawyers, and entrepreneurs who are willing to venture far and wide in pursuit of a better life.

The North Sumatra Pavilion at TMII is ready to welcome visitors with its unique charm. Before the renovation, there were six traditional houses, including Batak Simalungun, Batak Karo, Nias, Pakpak Dairi, Batak Toba, and Malay. Unique details adorn each house in the pavilion area, such as carvings of a pair of Dompak elephants and lizards as evil-repelling symbols on the Batak Toba traditional house, known as the Bolon house. Additionally, a buffalo head adorns the roof as a symbol of prosperity.

The Nias traditional house at the North Sumatra pavilion offers a unique feature: a two-meter-high pile of stones for the traditional stone-jumping sport. This attraction is showcased alongside the Nias Warrior performance and once adorned the Rp1,000 banknote in the past.

This pavilion also houses the beauty of Ulos cloth from Toba, Uis cloth from Karo, and Hiou cloth from Simalungun, which are traditional weaves believed to provide protection from evil spirits. Due to their sacredness, their presentation involves a special ceremony as they are considered meaningful offerings.

DID YOU KNOW?

With a length of 87 km, a width of 27 km, and a depth of half a kilometer, Lake Toba in North Sumatra is considered the largest caldera lake in the world. Its story is etched from three massive eruptions in the past. Uniquely, there is an island in the middle of the lake called Samosir Island, which is a volcanic island.
