Ceremonial Handover of Sekomandi Woven Cloth to the Indonesia Museum at TMII

Hello, Cultural Explorers! You probably already know that Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) is a place dedicated to preserving Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. This commitment is clearly reflected in TMII’s continuous efforts to safeguard and celebrate traditional cultural legacies from across the archipelago.
On July 27, 2024, TMII hosted a special cultural moment—the presentation of a traditional handwoven textile to the Indonesia Museum within the TMII grounds. The textile was formally presented by Dr. Hj. Siti Suraidah Suhandi, Chairwoman of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of West Sulawesi, and was handed over by Mr. Hj. Gemilang Sukma, Head of the West Sulawesi Provincial Liaison Agency.
The woven cloth is a Sekomandi Weaving, a traditional textile passed down through generations from the ancestors of Kalumpang, Mamuju, West Sulawesi Province.
Renowned as one of the oldest woven textiles in the world, the Sekomandi Weaving is estimated to be around 480 years old. Beyond its age, this textile stands out for its impressive dimensions—178 cm in length and 125 cm in width. Each pattern carries deep symbolic meaning, often used in traditional ceremonies such as rituals, weddings, and even funerals.
The specific motif of the cloth presented by Dr. Hj. Siti Suraidah is known as “Totandung Marilotong”, a design that represents strength and nobility. Dominated by black with a white base, this motif is rich in meaning—black is traditionally associated with mourning, while white symbolizes purity, sincerity, and deep-hearted devotion. The Totandung Marilotong motif is exclusively used in mourning ceremonies for members of the noble class.
To witness the beauty and cultural significance of the Sekomandi Weaving, visitors can view it directly at the Indonesia Museum within Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). Tickets can be purchased through the official website at www.tamanmini.com. For updates on TMII events and cultural programs, be sure to follow our social media @tmiiofficial.
Let’s celebrate and preserve the richness of Indonesian culture, see you at TMII!
