TMII Through the Years

Thousands of traditional patterns and cultural expressions color every corner of the Indonesian archipelago, from Sabang to Merauke, embodying the unique identity of each region. This immense diversity inspired former First Lady Siti Hartinah, fondly known as Ibu Tien Soeharto, to initiate the idea of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or TMII.

Born from the dream of a First Lady who wished to present her people with a space to explore the richness of Indonesia in one open park, TMII was inaugurated in April 1975 as a cultural preservation and development center. The vast cultural tapestry of Indonesia’s 33 provinces is beautifully represented here in the form of miniature islands, regional pavilions, traditional architecture, performing arts, recreational gardens, and various attractions. Spanning 150 hectares, this space has become a grand stage of arts, recreation, and education for visitors of all ages.

Decades passed, and on September 1, 2023, TMII unveiled its new, innovative, and revolutionary identity through the campaign #WajahBaruTMII (The New Face of TMII), anchored on four core pillars: green, inclusive, culture, and smart. The green pillar introduces an eco-park concept, where 70 percent of the area consists of lush green spaces with low emissions. The inclusive pillar ensures participation from all layers of society to celebrate culture together. The culture pillar provides a tourism destination where visitors are not only spectators but active participants in a wide range of artistic and cultural experiences. Finally, the smart pillar integrates digital platforms to make exploration of TMII more seamless, practical, and interactive.
